Elfis

At the beginning of the month we welcomed a friendly visitor into our classroom named Elfis. He is a classroom Elf on the Shelf and is here to monitor our positive school behavior this month. Elfis is creative in the places he likes to perch, and sometimes even leaves treats on the desks for the students. The kids have found that the better their behavior is, the sillier Elfis is.

Sight Word Bingo

One of our favorite times of the day is morning meeting. It is a time when we can come together, share with one another, get to know each other on more personal levels, and even be silly. It is fun to play games during this time, and this week we played sight word Bingo. The students seemed to really enjoy this morning meeting activity!

Race to 100

Students in Mrs. Humphreys' small group math have been playing a game called "Race to 100". Students roll 2 dice, add the numbers together, build with blocks, and regroup as needed until one person is the first to reach 100. As the week progressed, we add 20-sided dice and played "race to 1000".

Snow Day-ish

Today we just couldn't stand watching all of the fluffy beautiful snowflakes fall from the sky from indoors. So we went outside for math! We learned about using "shorthand math" to represent larger numbers. It was fun drawing shapes and symbols to represents different values in the snow. We culminated our math period with snow angels.

More suffixes!

Earlier this week, 2H was divided into groups for a base word + suffix challenge. Groups were given several base words and challenged to add as many suffixes to the word as possible to create new words. This was so much fun!

Ben the Dog

2H loves having Ben the therapy dog come to our classroom each Friday morning. Students enjoy interacting with Ben while reading and hearing read alouds by his owner, Susan.

Class Election: Oscar or Freddy?

Oscar wins! Students in 2H listened to 2 potential class mascot's campaign speeches and then voted in the voting booth to elect the new class mascot! There was a distinct class favorite with the popular vote going to Oscar the dog! Students enjoyed learning about the basics regarding a presidential election. Some words that were discussed: president, duties, veto, White House, military, voting, America, citizen, voting booth, election, ballot, and responsibility.

Suffix Endings

2H has been busy understanding base words and suffix endings and all of the many ways to use suffixes! We discovered that the -s and -es ending are tricky and that base words ending in -s,-sh,-ch,-x,or -z need an -es ending and all other words take a -s ending to make a word plural.

Similarly, we discovered that when adding -ed to base words to make a word in the past tense, you can get different sounds such as: /t/. /ed/, and /d/. We made this chart to help keep us on track (and some words are just plain irregular!):

Happy Halloween!

Mrs. Beland and Mrs. Humphreys represent the solar system on Halloween! Be safe trick-or-treating!

Math Updates

We have been working on measuring objects with non-standard measurement in class (measuring with cubes, paper rolls, paperclips, etc,). The kids were very engaged one day as we got to measure Jack and the Beanstalk's magical beans and garden beds.

Math Groups

We have been working hard in small math groups every M-Th afternoons. Each group focuses on a targeted math skills. These groups are flexible and are constantly changing and adjusting to the kid's abilities. We are very fortunate to have our district math leader come work with us during the week! We have been working on fact fluency (numbers to and within 20) and place value.

2H Sees Erosion and Weathering Up Close at the Quechee Dam

Last week, 2H and 2C took a quick afternoon field trip to the Quechee Dam to form our own observations about:

  • how erosion and weathering occurs
  • what weathering and erosion looks like in a real-life example.
  • brainstorm ways to prevent erosion from happening
  • build our own models of dams that would prevent or slow erosion and analyze/alter our thinking after pouring water into the self-made dams

Ones, Tens, Hundreds, and Thousands!

We began Unit 2 in math this week which includes a strong focus on measurement, double digit addition, subtraction, and place value. We started off the unit with Jack and the Beanstalk and discussed all of the measurement and money involved in the story that we normally do not even think about! Later, the kids will hear a story about Jack's brother Jim and all of the measurement problems he encounters.

Pete the Cat!

We had the privilege of getting to see Pete the Cat live at the Hopkins Center at the end of September. This was a spectacular show and all of the kids seemed to enjoy the performance!

Field Trip to the Tunbridge Fair

We had the best time on our first field trip to the Tunbridge Fair! We saw a pig race, cattle, a vegetable growing contest, demonstrations from the 1800's, and more. We got to sample maple cotton candy, fresh apple cider and got chocolate milk at the grandstand for lunch!

SmartBoards, Chrome Books, and iPads, oh my!

Since day 1 of 2nd grade the students have been begging me to use technology! Throughout last week we discussed usernames, passwords, and how to access all of our school technology. We talked about Internet safety and tech rules. We reviewed all of the learning resources we can use on the Chrome Books, SmartBoard and iPads. I am already amazed by how quickly they have caught on to using our classroom technology devices.

Make sure to check our the red take-home folder label for websites, usernames, and passwords to help your child access their websites at home!
